About me - in a nutshell

I have over 20 years’ experience working for a variety of agencies in client advocacy and insight research, marketing and new business.

 

Ultimately, I help businesses understand what their clients REALLY think about them with the goal of turning their clients into advocates. My experience has helped build relationships between businesses and their clients in a humancentric way.

 

I get under the skin of a business by interviewing clients and feeding back ways that can improve a business and the way they engage with their clients in a human way.  I have built up a range of methods that ensures business improvement and growth, while building long-lasting relationships that are based on a strong foundation of trust and respect between businesses and their clients, with the aim of turning them into advocates.

My story

Chapter one - being a nomad and making friends

Once upon a time, I was a little girl who moved... a lot. I had a nomadic childhood from the age of 9 - moving from the UK to America (all over) - and back again and again and again... I went to 16 different schools growing up... my focus was making friends - fast. My education was all about building relationships with different people from different backgrounds and learning to listen and understand people. It was hard and often scary - but I didn't have a choice... This was the start of the journey that bought me to what I do today - building strong relationships.

Chapter two - occasionally swearing works

At 20 I moved back to London and as a result of my strange education was told I'd never make it to university. This was not acceptable to me - so utilising my courage and determination I managed to blag an interview at University College London... only to be told it was a mistake as I didn't have the right qualifications. Long story short - after I swore at the head of the department, and told him that I was coming for the interview whether they liked it or not - he said yes. I finished my degree in History, Philosophy and Communication of Science at the top of my class. I then went on to get a Masters in Science Communication.

Chapter three - falling down the digital rabbit hole of agency life

I discovered agency life in 1999 at Reading Room - I did what all good agency people did back then... everything - from project management, consultancy, marketing, new business to making the tea... design and development were the only 2 things I didn't do. Over 5 years, I helped to build the profile of the business and clients from 6 to 60... It was an amazing education in running an agency during the dot.com boom and bust. I then went on to Precedent for 10 years to run their marketing and then new business. It was during this time that my passion for building strong client relationships started and the focus for developing my thinking around client advocacy was born.

Chapter four - Brilliant and Human is born

After many years of building potential and existing client relationships, I could see how hard it was to keep a client loyal and nurtured beyond the existing project - so I decided to dedicate my work to helping agencies do just that with a focus on building client advocates and Brilliant and Human was born in 2017. Since then I've been developing the business, looking for ways of building stronger more human relationships between agencies and their people - not just their clients but their teams as well. The power of listening and enabling businesses to hear what their clients and teams really think and want from their agency brings me joy and I love it when my clients report back how the insight I bought back from my interviews has helped them grow and improve. Ultimately, by being more human can make you brilliant!

My values and purpose

Human. Honest. Courage.

These are my values and I live them every day in my life and my business.

​

To be Human = Means to be caring, loving, empathetic, compassionate, helpful with the ability to listen and have a bit of fun in the process. 

 

To be honest = Honesty is critical in all I do. I am always honest and upfront with everyone, even if what I'm saying is not what people want to hear, but I will say it with care and love. People trust me and know I will be loyal, have integrity and fair. 

 

To have courage = To do what I do takes courage, speaking to anyone about sometimes difficult subjects can be hard. I can be challenging and know that what I have to say can be hard. It takes courage to take me on... I think fear is my biggest competitor. People may be afraid to use me - but if they have courage to hear the truth they will see benefits...

My purpose - is to humanise business. I want all businesses to have the courage to build better, more human businesses with their people at the heart of all they do - starting with listening to their people and being accountable to their people. 

​
